One man was killed and two women were injured during a hostage incident that took place early Sunday morning east of St. Henry that ending with a Ferdinand man taken into custody.

At around 2:40 Sunday morning deputies with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department as well as Ferdinand Police officers responded to the report of an intruder at a home along the 10-thousand block of County Road 50W where they found three victims, including a deceased male and two injured female victims.

Police say 37-year old Jeffrey Perry of Ferdinand was found dead at the scene of multiple stab wounds.

In addition to locating Perry, the first officers on the scene made contact with a first female victim who was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper.

Another injured female was being held hostage.

Deputies requested extra help that brought members of the Huntingburg and Jasper Police Departments to the scene, along with an Indiana State Police raid entry team and negotiators.

Authorities noted that snow and ice from an ongoing winter storm at the time complicated the situation and made it difficult to get officers and first responders to the scene.

Poppelwell MugAt approximately 5:40 am officers made entry into the home and took 25-year old Kyle Popplewell of Ferdinand into custody.

The second female victim was also taken to Memorial Hospital.

Both women were treated and released.

Popplewell was placed under arrest on a Level 1 felony count of murder, 2 Level 1 felony counts of rape and burglary, plus a Level 2 felony count of criminal confinement and a Level 5 felony count of battery causing serious bodily injury.

Authorities say the incident is still under investigation and more information is expected to be released.

The Dubois County Coroner’s Office, Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office, St. Henry Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services also assisted.
