Dubois County Assessor Gail Gramelspacher reminds taxpayers who own, hold, possess or control farm equipment or business equipment that the assessment date for personal property has been changed from March 1st to January 1st.

Another change in the law allows taxpayers who have less than 20-thousand dollars in acquisition costs in the county to file an exemption so that no tax will be due. If a return was filed in 2015, the tax payer will receive information in the mail concerning the changes.

The exemption form is also available at www.duboiscountyin.org under forms download.  The deadline for filing the exemption form is May 16th. Failure to file the form on time will result in a 25-dollar penalty per state law.

Now if the taxpayer’s acquisition costs are 20-thousand dollars or more in the county, the forms would be filed as usual.  Those owning farm equipment are required to file Personal Property Forms 102 and 104. Those owning business equipment are required to file Personal Property Forms 103 and 104.

If forms are not received in the mail, they are available from the county assessor online at www.in.gov/dlgf or on the Dubois County website at duboiscountyin.org/forms.

The deadline for filing the assessment forms this year is May 16th.

Failure to file a return by May 16th will result in a 25-dollar penalty.  In addition, if the return is not filed within 30 days after the return is due, a penalty of 20 percent of the taxes will be added.
