On Sunday afternoon the Schnellville volunteer fire department responded twice to a call of a fire that was reported in woods owned by the DNR. The fire was reported in a wooded area off of County Road 880 E which connects to Perry County Calhoun road and is partially gated off and locked by the Department of Natural Resources.

The fire was difficult to locate and access. Anderson Township was already on the scene from the Siberia side. An estimated 5 acres of forest were burned and the cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, however recently dry conditions in the area are thought to be a contributing factor.

Schnellville’s first response to the fire was at 2 p.m. followed by a second call shortly before 8 p.m. the same evening. 16 firefighters from Schnellville and 3 trucks were on the scene for the first call. They were assisted by the Birdseye Volunteer Fire Dept. who had 12 Firefighters and 2 trucks on the scene.

On the second run for Schnellville they had 18 firefighters and 2 trucks on scene for two hours, they were assisted by Anderson Township.

The area will continue to be monitored.
