The Indiana General Assembly has been back in session for more than a month now, with hundreds of bills being filed and working their way through the legislative process.

Among the pieces of legislation that will have an impact on our area is Senate Bill 358, which is co-authored by District 48 State Senator Mark Messmer of Jasper.

Messmer says the bill will benefit the farm wineries in the area such as Monkey Hollow, Pepper’s Ridge, Mystique, Windy Knoll, Patoka Lake Winery and French Lick Winery……

Meanwhile Senate Bill 182 would limit the length of time a school corporation can enter into a contract with a superintendent and the maximum buyout amount of those contracts.

Messmer says with the bill, taxpayers and local school boards would be protected from excessive superintendent buyouts and unreasonable contract terms…..

Messmer says the bill would limit the amount of a buyout to either the superintendent’s annual salary or $250,000, whichever is less.

Seante Bill 358 passed the Senate by a vote of 39-11, and Senate Bill 182 passed the Senate by a vote of 42-8. These bills now move to the House of Representatives for further discussion.
