Martha Sue Lukemeyer Chappell passed away on February 12, 2017 at the age of 81.  She was born to George and Frieda (Lowell) Lukemeyer on July 23, 1935 in Huntingburg, IN.  She graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1953 and in the Fall of that year attended Lockyear’s Business College in Evansville, IN.

In 1955, Sue married Bob Chappell also from Huntingburg.  They were together until his passing in 2004, just three months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.  They had three daughters.  Bob was a school teacher and long-time tennis coach at Columbus North High School.  Bob was awarded several Science Foundation scholarships which allowed them to travel to different states during the summers.

Sue was an avid bridge player in Columbus for over 51 years.  She worked for several different doctors in Columbus.  She spent several years working at Southern Indiana Urology Clinic.  After her retirement she did a lot of volunteering.  She volunteered at Just Friends Adult Day Care and Four Seasons Health Care Center in Columbus.  She also volunteered at Todd Aiken Health Center and United Methodist Home Health Center in Franklin, IN.  Sue was a member of the United Methodist Church in Huntingburg as a young girl, then later joined Columbus First United Methodist Church in Columbus, IN.

In 2006, Sue and Don Elshoff, a long time school friend from Huntingburg, IN, began sharing their lives together.  Six months of the year they lived in Surprise, AZ.  For years Sue and Don greatly enjoyed traveling the country visiting family, friends, and various points of interest until her illness no longer allowed her this pleasure.  Don was at Sue’s side throughout her final years bringing companionship, immense love and happiness, and unparalleled care.

Sue is survived by three daughters, Sandy (Bryan) Brown of Beverly Hills, CA, Sara (Charlie) Scott of Grand Lake, CO, and Susan Fields of Hope, IN.  Grandchildren include Ashley Scott (Greg) of Zionsville, IN, Charlie Scott (Kate) of Atlanta, GA, and J.R. Chappell (Alma) of Gilbert, AZ; and great grandson Marcus Chappell.  Surviving brothers are Doug Lukemeyer (Alice) and John Lukemeyer (Terry) both of Jasper, IN.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017, and Sunday, April 2, 2017.  On Saturday, April 1st, at Myers-Reed Funeral Chapel, 3729 E. 25th St., Columbus, IN 47203 visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12 noon.

On Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Nass & Son Funeral Home, 208 N. Main St., Huntingburg, IN 47542 visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m., E.D.T., with service at 2:00 p.m.  A private burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg, IN.
