Glenn H. Gramelspacher, age 91 of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at home in Jasper surrounded by family, both at his side, and via FaceTime from Georgia, Alaska, South Carolina, Florida, and Arizona.
Glenn was born in Jasper, Indiana on August 25, 1925 to Claude A. and Marie G. (Cassidy) Gramelspacher. He married Jane Salb on August 6, 1949 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, IN. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2015.
He graduated from Jasper High School in early 1943 as class president. After enlisting in the Navy prior to his 18th birthday, Glenn entered engineering school at Purdue University in the spring of 1943. He finished his undergraduate degree in 22 months. He was commissioned as an Ensign and served his country for four years aboard the USS Pickens. Glenn was honorably discharged before his 21st birthday and went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue.
Glenn’s life was one of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #147, and the Forty and Eight, where he served as a past commander, the VFW Post #673, the Lions Club, Kiwanis, and the Knights of Columbus, where he was a past Grand Knight. He served on Fairview Cemetery Board, was a president of the Jasper County Club, and a Serra Club member. He also served on the Board of Directors for the following: Memorial Hospital, St. Meinrad Abbey, Dubois County Bank, Jasper Seating Company, JOFCO, Jasper Wood Products, the Indiana Manufacturers Association, and the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers. Glenn was also a proud Kentucky Colonel.
Since his retirement, Glenn attended daily mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he was a lifelong member and served as a past chairman of the parish council. After mass, he attended a roundtable discussion at Headquarters Restaurant which came to be affectionately known as “the Table of Knowledge.” There is now a seat open at the table for an honest, decent, God fearing man, who enjoys discussing how to solve all of the world’s problems.
Surviving is one son, Glenn H. Gramelspacher II and his wife Margaret, Summerfield, FL, four daughters; Sherry Philbrick, Jasper, IN, Terry Habig and her husband Tom Howell, Palm Coast, FL, Lisa Pugh and her husband Tim, Alpharetta Georgia, Micki Jerry and her husband Kevin, Phoenix, AZ. Nine grandchildren; Nick and Chris Gramelspacher, Boomer Philbrick, Colby, Kelly (Gabriel) and Luke Habig, Brady and Brittney (Little) Pugh, and Brock Jerry, seven Great Grandchildren, one sister, Mary Alice Schutz, Indianapolis.
Preceding him in death besides his wife were three brothers, Robert, Kenneth, and Fr. Bert Gramelspacher, MM.
Funeral services for Glenn Gramelspacher will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The American Legion Post #147 will conduct Military Gravesite Rites.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time on Monday, April 17th, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
