The Indiana Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the South Spencer High School Auditorium, 1142 N CR 275 W, Rockport, Indiana 47635. The purpose of the public hearing is to offer all interested persons an opportunity to comment on current design plans for a proposed intersection improvement (Roundabout) at State Road (SR) 66 and Orchard Road (CR 275 W), 0.26 mile east of SR 161, located in Spencer County.
A proposed single lane roundabout would off-set to the northwest of the current intersection with a central island featuring a mountable curb. A paved truck apron will allow larger vehicles to maneuver through the roundabout. There would be a dedicated right-turn lane on southbound Orchard Road to westbound SR 66. Travel lanes in each direction would remain unchanged. In addition, several pipes will be replaced and new curb and gutter will be installed within the intersection.
Construction of the project will require approximately 0.8 acre of new permanent right-of-way.
The maintenance of traffic will allow SR 66 to remain open by restricting one lane of traffic which will be controlled by signals. Traffic traveling north and south along Orchard Road will experience disruptions requiring detours on state maintained SR 161 and SR 66, however local roads may be used by local traffic. Emergency management vehicles will continue to have access through the temporary north/south road closures. The northern leg will only be closed during summer when the schools are not in regular session. School corporations and emergency services will be notified prior to any construction that would block or limit access. Driveway access would be maintained to all local properties.
