As mentioned, Gutierrez was the subject of a six-hour standoff in a home near downtown Jasper Thursday evening.

Indiana State Police say at a quarter till 5 yesterday afternoon, an investigation by the United States Marshalls Task Force led them to a home at the corner of 4th and Clay Streets in Jasper, where they attempted to serve a felony warrant on Gutierrez.

Sargeant Philip Hensley spokesman with the Jasper Post of the Indiana State Police says Gutierrez was wanted through Vanderburgh County for Domestic Battery with a Deadly Weapon.

Hensley says as officers arrived at the residence, six different people were located and taken into custody; however, Gutierrez had barricaded himself in a crawl space in the basement. Officers also learned Gutierrez was armed with a handgun.

Members of the Marshall’s Task Force called the State Police for assistance.

State Police, officers with the Jasper Police Department and deputies with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department arrived and set up a security perimeter around the residence blocking several nearby streets until members of the State Police SWAT team and Hostage Crisis Negotiations team arrived.

Upon their arrival, negotiators began trying to speak with Gutierrez in order to reach a peaceful resolution.

While speaking with Gutierrez, police say he fired a round from his gun. Authorities do not believe he was firing at officers.

Knowing that Gutierrez was in fact armed, and had discharged his weapon, SWAT team members continued to attempt a peaceful resolution to the situation.

Then at 10:50 PM last night, SWAT team members were able to use less-lethal weapons to deescalate the situation and safely take Gutierrez into custody. He was transported to Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Hensley says the apprehension of Gutierrez was an overall successful collaboration between all law enforcement agencies involved….

Investigators remained at the scene overnight to collect additional evidence.

Once again a late development in this story. The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says Armando Gutierrez was found unresponsive in the area where he was being held at the Dubois County Security Center just before 6 o’clock this morning.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper where he was pronounced dead just after 8 o’clock.
