As schools welcome students back today after the long Holiday break the weather is delaying some start times. Otwell Miller Academy is seeing a 2 Hour delay this morning along with Paoli Community Schools and Orleans Community Schools who are also on a 2 hour delay. In Vincennes, Vincennes Community and Vincennes Catholic will observe a 2 hour delay start time as well.

Bone-chilling cold gripped much of the central U.S. as 2018 began Monday, breaking century-old records, icing over some New Year’s celebrations and leading to at least two deaths attributed to exposure to the elements.

Dubois County was under a wind chill advisory for the first two days of the new year as some areas here in southern Indiana saw -15 wind chill readings.

In Indianapolis on Tuesday they tied a record low of minus 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 24 degrees Celsius) for Jan. 2 set in 1887.

Although temperatures have been lower in Indiana — the all-time low was minus 36 (-38 Celsius) in 1994 — experts say the current frigid weather is unusual because of how long it’s lasted.
