Dr. Allen Dearing Scales, age 89, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, 16 January 2018 at The Waters nursing facility in Huntingburg. Dr. Scales was born on 3 September 1928 in Oakland City, Indiana and was the son of Dr. Alfred Blythe Scales and Mazo (Dearing) Scales. During his life, Dr. Scales was fortunate to have loved and married two women: Judith (Grabert), whom he was married to from 1958 until her death in 1980 and Evelyn (Begle) whom he married in 1982.

Dr. Scales graduated from Oakland City High School and studied pre-medicine at Evansville College (now the University of Evansville). He obtained his undergraduate degree in medicine from the University of South Dakota and went on to receive his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois in 1954. Soon after his graduation from the University of Illinois, he began his career as a naval officer and completed his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. During his years in the Navy, he was stationed at the Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Florida and was also the Air Group Flight Surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Yorktown. He was assigned to Patrol Squadron VP-22 based out of Barbers Point, Hawaii and deployed to Iwakuni, Japan. Growing up, Dr. Scales had an attraction to flying and obtained his pilot’s license while he was in college. He was an FAA certified flight surgeon and provided flight physicals for countless pilots during his medical career. His love of flying continued his entire life; one of his most difficult decisions was when he voluntarily gave up flying at the age of 70 and sold his treasured Piper Twin Comanche (N7392Y).

Upon completion of his naval duties, he moved to Huntingburg, Indiana and joined his father’s medical practice in 1958. Shortly after joining with his father, they spearheaded the construction of the Huntingburg Clinic and Pharmacy which was completed in the early sixties.  In 1972, he was accepted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians and he received his board certification and membership into the American Board of Family Physicians in 1978. He continued to practice medicine in Huntingburg until he relocated to Florida in 1981 following the death of his first wife. Once in Florida, he immediately opened a medical practice near Rockledge, Florida and continued to practice medicine until his retirement as Medical Director of the Indian River Colony Club Outpatient Clinic in 2001.

Dr. Scales is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Huntingburg; his daughter, Kimberly Kilinski (Larry), of Newburgh, Indiana; his son, Scott (Leesa), of Evansville, Indiana; his step-son, Jeff Egler (Wanda), of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his step-daughter, June Garrison, of Huntingburg and step-daughter, Jayne Egler (Darrell), of Rockledge, Florida. Dr. Scales had nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy (1980), his father, A.B. (1976), his mother, Mazo (1992) and his brother, Charles (2004).
