Richard R. “Dick” Schmitt, age 79 of Haysville, IN, passed away at 4:37 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper, IN.

Dick was born in Jasper, IN, on January 28, 1939 to Robert and Helen (Hatter) Schmitt.  He married Ellene Weisheit on November 17, 1962 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville.

Dick retired from Jasper Rubber Products in 2003 after 37 years of service.  He was also a part time delivery driver for Meyer Truck Equipment in Haysville.

Over the years, Dick served as Superintendent of the Haysville Water Utilities, served on the Haysville Park Board as park custodian, and volunteered for many community efforts.  Most recently he coordinated the pork chop grilling for the annual Haysville Sommerfest.

Dick served his community for 50 years as a member of the Haysville Community Volunteer Fire Department, serving terms as both Assistant Chief and Chief through the years.  He was certified in Dubois County’s first graduating class of Medical First Responders in 1983, and spent many years on the fire department’s First Responders team.  He provided traffic control for funerals in Haysville for many years.  He was scheduled to be recognized in the Indiana Statehouse by a special resolution read into the official records of the Senate and House of Representatives honoring the 50-year members of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association before his untimely passing.

Dick is survived by his wife, Ellene Schmitt, son Jeff Schmitt, Haysville, daughter Amy (Kent) Beckman of Dubois, one grandson, Anthony Schmitt, one sister, Wanda Faye Schmitt, Jasper, two brothers, Ronald (Lillian) Schmitt, Riverhead, NY and Howard (Patty) Schmitt, Jasper, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Gene and Dan Schmitt, and sister Madonna “Donna Lou” Kossen.

Funeral Services for Richard “Dick” Schmitt will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville, IN with burial to follow in St. Paul Cemetery in Haysville.

A visitation will be held from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper, Indiana, and from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. service time at church on Wednesday.  The Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, District 18, will perform a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
