Gov. Eric Holcomb, with the help of a group of advisers from around the state, recently nominated 156 census tracts to become opportunity zones.
Opportunity zones are economically distressed communities where new investments, under certain conditions, may be eligible for preferential tax treatment.
Census tracts were selected based on a combination of factors, including existing economic development programs and local coordination of efforts, economic and community data, likelihood of attracting short- and long-term investment and growing industry sectors within the community.
Portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox and Pike counties were among the census tracts nominated.
