County by county unemployment numbers for the month of October have been released and despite a jump of a half of a percent, Dubois County once again shares the top spot with the state’s lowest unemployment rate.

Local figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show Dubois County’s rate of those out of work last month at 2.6 percent up from 2.1 percent in September. Dubois shares the lead with both Bartholomew and Tipton Counties.

Statewide Indiana’s unemployment remained steady in October from September at 3.5 percent.

The state’s unemployment rate remained below the national rate of 3.7 percent. With the exception of October 2014, when it was equal to the national rate, the state’s unemployment rate has been below the U.S. rate for more than five years.

Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of more than 5,300 over the previous month, which was a result of more than 2,400 unemployed residents no longer seeking employment and an about 2,900 increase in residents employed. The state says Indiana’s total labor force is nearly 3.4 million.

Locally as we mentioned Dubois County once again shared the top spot with the state’s lowest unemployment rate. A three-way tie with Tipton and Bartholomew counties. Dubois shared the top spot despite a spike of a half percent to 2.6 percent.

Numbers for surrounding counties include Daviess and Martin Counties both at 2.9 percent. Warrick was right behind at an even 3 percent. Spencer County 3.3 percent, Pike three and a half, Perry 3.6, Orange 4.1 and Crawford County’s October unemployment rate came in at 4 and a half percent.

Like Dubois, each county saw a significant increase from the month before.

Vermillion County north of Terre Haute once again had the state’s highest unemployment rate last month at 5.3 percent.
