The Heartland Half Marathon is coming up in the next few weeks and The Heartland Half Marathon committee asks anyone driving in and around Jasper on the morning of Saturday, September 21 to be on the lookout for road closures and runners and walkers. Please use caution and have patience while waiting at intersections if runners are coming through. Many of these individuals have spent months training for this event, and The Heartland Half Marathon committee want to make this a great and safe event for the participants!

Road closures will begin at 6:30 a.m. to approximately 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 21 and will include Third Avenue from Azura Grill & Café to Jackson Street and Jackson Street from Third to Ninth Street.

Another way that residents can help make this event a success is by cheering on the runners. Signs, music, or just good, old-fashioned clapping along with words of support go a long way in encouraging a runner or walker to keep pushing toward the finish line. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. eastern time. Let’s show this year’s participants what Hoosier hospitality is all about!

Due to road construction, this year’s route differs slightly from previous years. The route begins on the Third Avenue Patoka River bridge, then heads north on Jackson Street (instead of Mill Street), west on Ninth Street, south on Main Street, west on Second Street, south on Indiana Street, and crosses Hwy 231 at First Avenue. The route then proceeds south on St. Charles Street and follows a detour through the north parking lot of the Dubois County Health Department, runs along the sidewalk west of the building, and exits onto 12th Avenue before proceeding south on Kimball Boulevard. The route then continues west on 100 South, north on Old Huntingburg Road, west on Division Road, north on Sunshine Drive, east on Shelyn Drive, north on Kluemper Road, east on Andrew Lane, north on St. Charles Street, east on Northwood Avenue and 30th Street to Cathy Lane. The last section of the route takes the runners south on Cherry Street to 15th Street, where they will enter the Jasper Riverwalk to run through the finish line at Buehler Plaza.

Registrations for the races are still being accepted. Registration can be made online at heartlandhalfmarathon.com or runsignup.com. The registration fee for the half marathon is $70. The 5K registration fee is $25. For the Team Challenge (a group of four running the half marathon as a relay), the registration fee is $100 per team. Pre-registrants will receive a free shirt.
