Irene R. Wendholt, 89 of Ferdinand passed away Tuesday September 24th at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. Irene was born February 7, 1930 in Saint Meinrad to Oscar & Maria Matilda (Werne) Vaal. She was united in marriage to Robert L. Wendholt on October 14, 1950 in Saint Meinrad Archabbey Church. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1996.

Irene was a member of Christ the King Parish, Saint Ferdinand Church. She was a hairdresser for many years. She and her husband Robert (Bob) were co-owners of The Covered Bridge Tavern from 1955 to 1970, and owners of Bob’s Liquors from 1970 to 1992. She enjoyed “Red hat” gatherings, flowers, traveling and sports activities.

Surviving are three sons, Gary (Geri) Wendholt and Rick (Sue) Wendholt both of Ferdinand, and Sam Wendholt of Indianapolis. 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Edgar Vaal of Ferdinand. Irene was preceded in death by a great- grandson, Everett Persohn, one sister Mildred (Hagedorn) Leggett and two brothers, Alvin and Eugene Vaal.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday October 2nd in St. Ferdinand Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 8:00 AM until service time. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com.
