Two people were killed in an early morning fire today in Spencer County

Just after 5 o’clock central time this morning firefighters with the Chrisney Volunteer Fire Department were called to a structure fire located a half mile west of Chrisney on County Road 900 North

The fire was reported by a passing motorist.

Chrisney Fire Chief Kent Groves says the structure was fully involved once crews arrived at the scene.

Tanker assistance from the Grandview and Jackson Township fire departments was immediately requested .

Neighbors reported that they believed that an elderly couple resided in the home and were still thought to be inside.

Once the fire was extinguished firefighters had to wait before they were able to search the debris and while doing so the remains of two people perished in the blaze were discovered.

The names of the deceased were not released by fire officials pending notification of family members

The home was destroyed.

A total of 28 firefighters from all three departments were on the scene for about 6 hours.

The fire is under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshall.

No cause has yet been determined.
