Mabell C. Schitter, age 88, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday (December 5, 2015) at Brookside Village in Jasper.

Schitter, MabellMabell was born in Haysville, Indiana, on May 31, 1927 to John and Mattie (Opel) Dorsam. She married Aloysius H. “Butts” Schitter on June 15, 1948.  He preceded her in death onMarch 10, 1982.

She was a graduate of Dubois High School.

Mabell was a homemaker and then worked as a housekeeper supervisor for the Holiday Inn and Best Western Hotels.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Oblates of St. Benedict, the Jasper Moose, American Legion Post #147 Auxiliary, and Red Hat Society.  She was a past president and member of the Jasper D of I #140, St. Ann’s Society, Grandmother’s Club,  Bainbridge Extension Homemakers, and the Jasper V.F.W. Post #673 Auxiliary.  She was also a member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a past board member.

She volunteered at Memorial Hospital, Northwood Good Samaritan Health Center, where she assisted with Mass and bingo, the American Red Cross, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she visited the homebound and assisted with the distribution of Communion, and the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO).

She received the Brute Award in 2002 and received the Martin H. Miller Sr. Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003 from Generations.

She enjoyed volunteering, playing cards, bingo, bowling, going to the casino, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are two daughters, Margaret “Magy” Clark and Cindy Jane Schitter, one great grandson, Michael Dylan Schitter, and four siblings, who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Mabell C. Schitter will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday (December 11, 2015) at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.

Friends may call from 2:00-8:00p.m. on Thursday (December 10, 2015) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.  The Jasper D of I and St. Ann’s will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center, or to a favorite charity.
