An early morning brush fire on SR 64, was safely extinguished. The Schnellville and Birdseye Fire Departments responded to a report of a fire in a road ditch around 3: 20 am just west of Mentor. Upon arrival firefighters found a 300 ft by 50 ft area of ditch burning. A 20 pound LP tank was spotted in the middle of the burning debris. Firefighters immediately cooled the tank while the fire was being extinguished. Upon examination of the LP tank it was decided that it was empty and had been there quite some time. Cause was likely a discarded cigarette. There were thirteen fire fighters and three trucks on the scene. No injuries or damage were reported.
