A school bus carrying students on a field trip became stuck in a median on Monday morning, leading to the arrest of the driver on operating while intoxicated charges.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 9:07 a.m. on May 5, 2025, reporting that a school bus was stuck in the mud in the median at U.S. 50 and County Road 300W in Washington. Deputies arrived to find a 2007 yellow Freightliner bus owned by the Diocese of Evansville Catholic Church, which was being used for a field trip for Washington Catholic Schools.

The driver, 55-year-old Steven W. Truelove of Washington, was taken to Daviess Community Hospital for a drug and alcohol screening. Authorities reported that his blood alcohol concentration was 0.221—more than twice the legal limit.

All 38 children and four adult passengers were safely removed from the bus. No injuries were reported.

Truelove was booked into the Daviess County Security Center and faces a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment. He is currently being held without bond. The Washington City Police Department and Craney’s Body Shop assisted at the scene.
