A state review of Dubois County Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter’s police certification is moving ahead after a brief meeting this week in Plainfield. The Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board set a schedule for both sides to exchange evidence through the end of January, with a two day hearing planned for late April. The board will decide whether the sheriff keeps his certification.

The administrative case follows earlier questions over jail commissary spending and a separate records request that showed multiple golf outings during regular work hours. While those matters did not bring criminal charges, they added to concerns already raised during a previous state inquiry into the use of public resources and travel expenses. That earlier inquiry also noted personal activities added to trips that were submitted as professional travel.

Board officials confirmed that the certification review will focus on the totality of those past findings along with the more recent claims involving time away from regular duties. The review continues even though prosecutors opted not to file charges after the state police investigation.

Additional details are expected as the case moves through the discovery process.

This is an ongoing story.
