The Invasive Species Awareness Coalition (ISAC) of Dubois County and the Orange County Invasives Partnership are offering multiple free walks this year to help you brush up on your plant ID skills in Spring, Summer, or Fall.

Natural areas in southern Indiana feature many beneficial native plants, but also destructive invasive plants such as Garlic Mustard, Autumn Olive, Japanese Stiltgrass, and Burning Bush. These plants can look different throughout the season which is why these two local groups are teaming up this year to provide four free plant ID walks in Dubois and Orange Counties.

These events are suitable for all abilities, moving at a slow pace along paved or gravel trails. Each walk will take approximately 1 hour, rain or shine (except in the case of severe weather).

No RSVPs are needed to attend, but for more information reach out to the contact listed for each event.

The dates and locations for the four events are as follows:

  • Thursday May 7th at 6 PM at the Dubois County Park Shelterhouse #4 (located at 4157 IN-162 in Huntingburg).
  • Saturday June 6th at 9:30 AM at the Jasper Riverwalk. Attendees should go to the Jasper Farmers Market, and meet at the Patoka Lake Watershed booth (located at 100 Third Ave, Jasper, IN).
  • Saturday August 22nd at 9 AM at the Patoka Lake Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area in Birdseye. This walk will take place along a portion of the bike trail that runs next to the main road. Meet at the Bike Trail Parking Lot that is south of County Road 1025 South (38.400603, -86.659526). Attendees will either need to pay the daily entry fee or have a State park pass.
  • Thursday October 29th at 4:30 PM at Niehaus Park (located at 403 W 6th St Huntingburg, IN). Meet at the beginning of the forested trail.
