Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a one vehicle accident north of Birdseye early this morning where the driver of the pickup involved was eventually life flighted to a Louisville hospital.

Around 2:20 this morning the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says 21-year old Tyler Eckert of St. Anthony was southbound on Kings Ridge Road a mile east of Harts Gravel Road when deputies say for an unknown reason, his truck ran off the roadway and into a ditch striking a tree and a culvert before coming to a rest in the roadway.

Deputies say Eckert, who was reported to have various non-life threatening injuries, made his own way to Memorial Hospital in Jasper with the help of family and friends. He was then transferred by LifeFlight helicopter to a Louisville hospital for treatment of his injures that were considered non life-threatening.

Once again authorities say alcohol was believed to have been a possible factor in the incident and charges are pending.

Damage to Eckert’s truck was estimated at $8,000.
