The Spencer County Coroner’s Office identified the driver and passenger of a fatal accident on I-64 that occurred shortly before 10 pm Monday evening just 1.5 miles east of Ferdinand. The driver was 58-year old James Michael Steward, and his wife, 55-year old Helen Steward of Virginia, Both were pronounced dead after their SUV was rear ended by 19- year old Zachary Henry of Kentucky.

Indiana State Police report a car driven by 19-year old Zachary Henry of Kentucky was traveling east on I-64 when Henry unexpectedly drove upon the Steward’s SUV that was stopped in the driving lanes of the interstate. Unable to stop or avoid the SUV, police say Henry crashed into the rear of the vehicle, pushing it down an embankment and onto its roof.

The Steward’s were pronounced dead by the Spencer County Coroner. They say Henry suffered minor injuries in the crash. The accident remains under investigation by Indiana State Police.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Ferdinand Police and Spencer County Sheriff’s Departments, the Ferdinand and Saint Meinrad Fire Departments, Lifeline Air Ambulance, and Memorial Hospital EMS.
