An historic building in the heart of Birdseye that was the subject of preservation efforts was destroyed by a Thursday afternoon fire.

The blaze broke out at the Koerner Block building also known by most in Birdseye as “Cricket’s Store” around a quarter after 3 pm in a section on the structure’s upper floor on the south side.

Crews from the Birdseye, Schnellville and English responded to battle the fire at the building located along State Road 145.

Sections of the building that dated back to the late 1800’s began to fall as firefighters worked the blaze. A few pieces of antique furniture were saved from the blaze while most of the interior was destroyed.

Several nearby structures including a home next door were sprayed down by firefighters to prevent any additional damage. Damage was reported at the Birdseye Library across the street.

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours dousing hot spots and were called back around 5 o’clock this morning when the fire rekindled.

A representative from the state fire Marshall’s office was called to the scene to help determine a cause of the blaze which is considered as suspicious in nature.
