Sylvester M. Giesler, age 95 of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 12:50 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, IN.
Sylvester was born in Jasper, Indiana on June 5, 1923 to Leander and Rosa (Dick) Giesler. He married Irene Theising on November 8, 1948 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schnellville, IN.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran who served as an aerial gunner in WWII where he was awarded the Air Medal, and was a member of the VFW Post #673 in Jasper.
Sylvester worked as a mechanic for Alvin C. Ruxer Ford in Jasper, and then retired from Jasper Engines. He also taught a mechanics class for women at Vincennes University Jasper.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, the Jasper Knights of Columbus, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
He enjoyed gardening, playing softball, watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Surviving are his wife, Irene R. Giesler, Jasper, two daughters, Martha Wehr, Jasper, Mary Witte (Michael) Zionsville, IN, seven sons, Kenneth Giesler (Sarah), Haysville, Richard Giesler (Lois), Jasper, Stanley Giesler (Nancy), Jasper, Ronald Giesler (Karla), Evansville, Gary Giesler (Kris), Jasper, Jeffrey Giesler (Angie), Jasper, and Paul Giesler (Jamie), Ferdinand, twenty one grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and two sisters, Leona Knust (Reynold), Ferdinand, and Sr. Mildred Giesler, St. Mary of the Woods.
Preceding him in death were one grandchild, Kale Giesler, one son-in-law, Richard Wehr, four sisters, Ardella Heim, Florence Neuhoff, Mary Ann Uebelhor, and Viola Schroeder, and four brothers, Edward, Herman, Robert, and Arnold Giesler.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sylvester M. Giesler will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper with entombment to follow at Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper. The VFW Post #673 will conduct military graveside rites.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, and from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. service time at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday.
