A Spencer County man was taken into custody early Thursday afternoon after he was accused of taking items from the Jasper Walmart store without paying for them.

Around 12:30 pm yesterday officers with the Jasper Police Department were called to the northside supercenter after learning that members of the Walmart Loss Prevention team had 38-year old David Tabbert of Santa Claus detained for theft.

Loss Prevention told police they had witnessed Tabbert conceal Sony headphones and a blue ray DVD and that he had paid for some other items, but did not make any attempt to pay for the headphones and DVD.

Store employees told police Tabbert then left out of the General Merchandise side of the store where he was stopped, detained, and the concealed items were recovered.

Police say the total amount of the theft was just over $180.

Tabbert was placed under arrest and was taken to and booked into the Dubois County Security Center on a misdemeanor count of Theft.
