The 32nd Annual Distinguished Citizen Award Banquet held by the Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trace Council will be honoring Dr. Scott Beckman on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024. This banquet will be held at the Huntingburg Event Center with the reception at 6 PM and dinner at 6:45 PM.

Dr. Scott Beckman began his medical career as an Emergency Medical Technician with Memorial Hospital’s Ambulance Service in 1981, eventually becoming the Director of Ambulance Services. He was instrumental in developing a full-time ambulance service at Memorial Hospital. He also served as the Dubois County Emergency Medical Services Coordinator and was involved in the early development of the 911 service in Dubois County.

He served as Deputy Coroner and in 1988 was elected the Dubois County Coroner. He held these positions until 1990 when he decided to pursue a career as a physician.

Dr. Beckman went back to school and graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington; attending IU School of Medicine and completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2001. He practiced at Jasper ObGyn and in February of 2022 was diagnosed with AML Leukemia and retired from practice. He delivered nearly 4000 babies.

He had been very involved in medical staff leadership positions at Memorial Hospital; serving as medical staff president, chairman of surgery, obstetrics, and credentials committees, and member of the hospital’s Board of Directors. He was awarded the inaugural Little Company of Mary Oustanding Physician Award in 2013.

Dr. Beckman is an IU School of Medicine Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has served as the Regional Site Leader for the IU School of Medicine Evansville Campus. He has been awarded multiple teaching awards for his efforts in educating future practitioners. He was recognized with the Jasper High School Oustanding Alumni Award in 2029.

Dr. Beckman and his wife Chris (Oser) have been married for 36 years and live in Jasper. They have two sons, Ross and Alec.

The guest speaker for the event will be Dr. Jennifer Schwartz.

Dr. Schwartz completed medical school and Internal Medicine Residency at McGill University and Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. She joined the faculty at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2003. She currently serves as the Interim Division Chief of Hematology-Oncology, Interim Director of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy as well as Associate Dean of the Division of Continuing Education in Healthcare Professionals. She previously served as the Assistant Dean for Curriculum in Medical Student Education, overseeing the 3rd year statewide clerkship curriculum.

Dr. Schwartz’s area of clinical practice is allogeneic stem cell transplantation where she treats patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies.

Her clinical research focuses on the prevention and treatment of graft versus host disease and novel CAR-T therapies. Additionally, she continues to conduct research in medical education.

Dr. Schwartz has served as an Associate Editor of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Digital Education Editorial Board and is currently a member of the ASCO Annual Meeting Education Committee.

She was selected to join the ASCO Education Scholars Program and is a founding member of the ASCO Medical Education Community of Practice where she is the Chair of the Annual Meeting Committee. She has served as a Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee of the Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) and has chaired their regional meeting.

Dr. Schwartz is a passionate volunteer within her community, having served on multiple boards and co-chairing an annual campaign to raise funds for those in need.

Dr. Schwartz is currently providing oncology care for Dr. Scott Beckman.
