The Huntingburg Police Department’s K9 Romeo is now equipped with a bullet- and stab-resistant vest, thanks to a charitable contribution from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing protective gear for law enforcement dogs. The vest bears the inscription, “In memory of K9 Falco, Gary, IN- EOW 7/13/23.”

Founded in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that has supplied over 5,878 protective vests to K9 officers in all 50 states. These U.S.-made, custom-fitted vests meet NIJ certification standards and offer a five-year warranty. The nonprofit has invested $6.9 million into its mission, supported by private and corporate donations.

The program is available to certified law enforcement K9s at least 20 months old, as well as those with expired vests. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s in the U.S., the need for protective equipment remains significant.

Individuals can sponsor a vest with a donation of $1,050 or contribute any amount to support the cause. Each vest, valued at $1,800, weighs four to five pounds and is designed to protect these vital four-legged officers.
