As warmer months approach, the Washington Street Department is reminding residents about regulations concerning tree trimming and removal within the city. According to city ordinance, any hired contractor or individual engaged in trimming or cutting trees must secure a permit from the appropriate city department before starting work.

The ordinance mandates that all cleanup and removal of limbs and debris are the responsibility of the hired party. If the contractor or individual fails to perform these duties, the landowner must ensure proper disposal.

For residents handling tree work themselves, the city provides specific guidelines for debris placement:

  • Limbs should be neatly stacked with cut ends facing the street or alley.
  • Piles should not exceed 4 feet in height or length.
  • Tangled or haphazard piles will not be collected; property owners must either untangle them for future pickup or arrange for their disposal.

The Street Department’s limb pickup service is intended for routine trimmings and storm-related debris, not for the removal of entire trees. Additionally, the city will not collect tree trunks, root wads, limbs over 15 inches in diameter, or piles pushed to the street with equipment resulting in tangled mounds.

Residents seeking further information or clarification are encouraged to contact the Street Department.
