This year, the Indiana General Assembly passed several laws aimed at workforce development, education and combating the opioid crisis.

One bill that was passed this legislative session will allow all Hoosiers to purchase low THC hemp extract or cannabidiol (CBD).

District 48 State Senator Mark Messmer of Jasper notes that in recent years, research has shown that extracts from the hemp plant have a variety of medical benefits in treating people who suffer from epilepsy, depression and even high blood pressure.

Messmer says senate Enrolled Act 52 legalizes hemp extract products that contain no more than .3 percent THC, which is the chemical in marijuana that causes the “high” feeling……

Messmer says Senate Enrolled Act 52 also contains some common-sense regulations in order to ensure the products are safe. For example, all hemp extract that will be sold in Indiana is required to have its contents verified with an independent, certified laboratory, and all packaging must include labeling with a QR code that links to a list of all ingredients.

Messmer says the bill also allows the Department of Revenue to revoke the retail certificate and allows criminal prosecution of retailers who sell products claiming to be legal hemp extract but are actually illegal marijuana products….

Many people across the country have benefited from using CBD oil with very few side effects. This bill allows more Hoosiers to purchase this product so they can treat their ailments whether it’s for severe epilepsy or other medical conditions.
