A Richland man is facing several charges after striking a Spencer County sheriff’s deputy.

The deputy was doing a welfare check on 43-year-old William Beckort on Thursday.

Beckort struck the deputy in the head with a closed fist.

Beckort was taken to the ground, arrested, and transported to the Spencer County LEC for processing after medical clearance.

During this process, jail staff found partial pieces of saw blades that he was trying to traffic into the facility.

Beckort is charged with battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety official, trafficking with an inmate,-deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, and disorderly conduct.

The Sheriff’s Deputy suffered minor injuries during the incident.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
