Charles Lee Buechler, 89, of St. Meinrad, passed away on Saturday, February 1st at Scenic Hills at the Monastery in Ferdinand, surrounded by his wife, his children, and many grandchildren. He was born on June 16, 1935, in St. Anthony to George and Stella (Mundy) Buechler, and married Elizabeth “Betty” Schlachter on November 17, 1962, at St. Meinrad Catholic Church.

Charles served in the United States Army, 25th Infantry. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii from 1956 until 1958 and later retired in Jasper after 21 years in the Army Reserve. In his later years, he was extremely honored to experience a recent trip with Honor Flight EVV10 of Southern Indiana and often enjoyed Saturday night trips to Owensboro for the Goldies Show.

A devoted member of his community, Charles was a lifetime member of the St. Meinrad Knights of Columbus and St. Meinrad American Legion Post 366, where he served as a former Sergeant at Arms and Honor Guard member.

Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Buechler; his son, George (Shelly) Buechler of Huntingburg; his daughters, Carolyn (Paul) Leffert of Mariah Hill, Brenda Spayd, Kristi (Vince) Wagner of Evansville, and Janis (Kurt) Tretter of Ferdinand; his sister, Mary (Donald) Knust of Ferdinand; fourteen grandchildren—Brandy (Brent) Burton, Cody (Ashley) Leffert, Luke (Tori) Leffert, Justin (Emily) Buechler, Brittney (Bryce) Mosby, Holly and Sarah Buechler, Adley and Mallory Spayd, Landon, Jaeden and Raegen Wagner, Taylor (Trent) Weyer, and Morgan Tretter; five great-grandchildren—Carter and Waylon Burton, James Buechler, Kennedy and Cooper Weyer; and one on the way. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose (John) Fuhs and Mercedes (Roman) Hochgesang, and three brothers, Jake (Liseta), Robert (Jean), and Linus (Ruth) Buechler.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 5th, at 10:00 AM CST at St. Meinrad Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. Meinrad Cemetery. St. Meinrad American Legion Post 366 will conduct military graveside honors. Friends may call on Wednesday at St. Meinrad Church from 8:00 AM CST until the time of services.
