The Tell City Police Department has announced a citywide initiative to locate and remove abandoned vehicles from public and private properties. This proactive effort aims to enhance community safety, improve neighborhood appearance, and enforce state laws and local ordinances.

Under the guidelines of the initiative, a vehicle may be classified as abandoned if it is left illegally parked or unmoved on public property for more than three consecutive days, is visibly inoperable (e.g., with flat tires, broken windows, or missing parts), or is blocking traffic or creating a hazard. Additionally, vehicles that are six or more model years old, mechanically inoperable, and left on private property—yet visible from public spaces—for over 30 days also qualify.

Officers will be conducting a sweep across the city to identify such vehicles. If a vehicle meets the criteria, a 72-hour notice will be issued. If the vehicle is not moved within that window, it will be towed at the owner’s expense.

The department urges residents to take swift action if they suspect their vehicle may be in violation. Community members are also encouraged to report suspected abandoned vehicles to help keep Tell City clean, safe, and welcoming.
