Elizabeth C. Schmitt, age 96, of Ireland, Indiana, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Monday (February 29, 2016) at home.

Elizabeth C. SchmittElizabeth was born in St. Anthony, Indiana on August 15, 1919 to Wendel and Lena (Burke) Wagner.   She married Othmar J. Schmitt on May 4, 1946 in St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Indiana.  He preceded her in death on February 10, 1987.

Elizabeth was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, St. Ann’s Society, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the Ireland Sportsman Club.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death besides her husband are, one great granddaughter, Cora Ann Fleck, one great grandson, Carter Joseph Schmitt, one step granddaughter, Shannon Sermersheim, one sister, Agnes Schmitt, and six brothers, Tony, Alois, Richard, Joe, and Maurice Wagner, and one who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Elizabeth C. Schmitt will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (March 5, 2016) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 12:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday (March 4, 2016) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.  The St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
