JASPER- Former Jasper Mayor Jerome Alles, who served the community for over a decade passed away on Saturday July 2nd.

A native of Jasper, 90-year old Jerome Alles, passed away on Saturday in Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center in Jasper. He served the community for over a decade as Mayor of Jasper from January 1, 1980 thru December 31, 1991.

He is the 11th Mayor of Jasper from the total 13 mayors including current Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz.

He graduated from Jasper High School in the Class of 1944. Played baseball and basketball at Jasper High School and was a member of the 1944 Jasper High School Basketball sectional champions.

Former Mayor Alles was also a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the European Theatre during WWII.

He was well recognized for his accomplishments as he was a two time Recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, once each by Governors Bayh and O’Bannon. Former Mayor Alles was also an honorary field examiner by the Indiana State Board of accounts and was the first Democrat to ever to receive this award.

Aside from his professional roles he was also an avid sports fan, as he played for the Jasper Reds baseball team. He was also a big fan of Jasper High School Wildcats sports, San Francisco Giants, and IU Basketball. Former Mayor Alles was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, V.F.W. Post # 673, American Legion Post # 147, and J-Men Letterman Club.

Funeral services for former mayor Jerome Alles will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, (July 7, 2016), in St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in the Jasper City Cemetery. The V.F.W. Post # 673 will conduct military grave side rites.
