The Indiana Department of Education kicked off the 2019 Summer Food Service Program on Tuesday.

In partnership with nearly 250 school and community sponsors, children 18 and younger across the state will now have access to free meals and snacks throughout the summer break.

June is the busiest month for the summer food program because families seek help for additional nutrition resources.

As a result, Governor Eric Holcomb is issuing a statewide proclamation declaring the week of June 10th to the 14th Summer Food Service Program week.

The Summer Food Service Program is a federal nutrition program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Indiana Department of Education.

The program is designed to meet the needs of low-income children in areas where children may have limited access to good nutrition.

In Dubois County, the following sites will operate this summer: Huntingburg City Park, Jasper Public Library, Huntingburg Elementary School, and Jasper’s Tenth Street School.

In Spencer County, the sites operating this summer are Chrisney Elementary School, David Turnham Education Center, and Rockport Elementary School.
