Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fatal Spencer County off-road vehicle accident.

At approximately 3:44 PM on Thursday, October 19th, first responders were dispatched near the area of County Road North and County Road 125 West.

Upon arrival, officers learned that 80-year-old Melvin Melsheimer, of Tennyson, was helping a juvenile operate a side-by-side off-road vehicle when they left the roadway and went into a ditch before striking a tree.

On-scene lifesaving measures were performed on Melsheimer but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.

No helmets or safety equipment were in use at the time of the accident, which remains under investigation.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind the public that off-road vehicle operators and passengers should always wear a helmet and protective riding gear, and use all off-road vehicle safety restraints.
