The Jasper Board of Public Works & Safety appointed Jasper Officer Ben Knies to the position of Sergeant.

Lieutenant Dave Burger indicated the process for appointment was challenging: “the Board of Public Works and Safety interviewed 4 Officers for promotion to Sergeant and each Officer showed the leadership qualities that we are looking for. The Board had to make a difficult decision, but I am excited for Ofc. Ben Knies and know that he will do a great job for the department.”

“Ofc. Knies has been an excellent Officer for our police department, and I believe he will do an excellent job in his new role as a Sergeant. His experience as a leader in the Marine Corps will serve him well in his new position.”- Chief Nathan Schmitt

Sgt. Knies has served with JPD as a Patrolman since 2021. In addition to his duties of patrol, Sgt. Knies is our Department’s Veteran Affairs Certifying Official and is a certified Advance Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement Officer. Sgt. Knies is a graduate of the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
