Building Community 2025, a civic organization based in southwestern Indiana, will host its second event in the Teach-Ins 2025 series, titled “Tariffs for the Average Person.” The session is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time at St. Benedict’s Brew Works, located at 860 E. 10th St. in Ferdinand.

The event aims to provide a nonpartisan forum for community members to explore the impact of tariffs and recent economic policies on everyday Americans. John Stocker, a former head of a trade association representing American shipyards in Washington, D.C., will facilitate the discussion. Drawing from his experience during the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the industry sought tariffs on foreign-built ships entering U.S. ports, Stocker will offer insights into the complexities of trade policy and its implications for domestic industries.

This teach-in follows the inaugural session, “Immigration 101,” held on May 22, which featured Sister Joan Scheller, O.S.B., from the Sisters of St. Benedict Latino Outreach and Immigration Services. Approximately 50 attendees participated in that event, engaging in discussions about pathways to citizenship and the experiences of immigrants in the local community.

Teach-Ins 2025 is inspired by the educational forums of the 1960s and is designed to foster informed, inclusive conversations on pressing social, political, and environmental issues. All events in the series are held at St. Benedict’s Brew Works from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Upcoming sessions include:

  • June 19: Race Relations (facilitator to be announced)
  • July 31: Environment & Public Health, facilitated by Dr. Norma Kreilein
  • August 21: Observations on the Decline of America’s Military Power, facilitated by John Stocker

Building Community 2025 seeks to build connections within rural Indiana communities by promoting fact-based discussions and fostering a spirit of open-hearted engagement.
