As the summer grilling season heats up, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is urging residents to practice safe outdoor cooking habits. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than 9,000 home fires per year between 2017 and 2021 were caused by grills.

To prevent accidents and injuries, officials recommend the following safety precautions:

  • Clean grills regularly to remove grease and fat buildup.
  • Never leave a charcoal or gas grill unattended while in use.
  • Keep grills positioned well away from homes, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
  • Check propane grills frequently for gas leaks and have them serviced by a professional if any are detected.
  • If you smell gas while grilling, step away and contact the fire department immediately.
  • Avoid placing grills on dry grass or near combustible materials.
  • Do not add starter fluid to a grill once the fire has been lit.
  • After cooking, allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.

By following these guidelines, Hoosiers can enjoy their summer cookouts while reducing the risk of fire or injury.
