The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is reminding Hoosiers that June is Pet Preparedness Month—a time to make sure your entire household, including pets, is ready for emergencies. About five percent of people choose not to evacuate during disasters because they can’t bring their pets, according to the agency.
Whether you’re evacuating with your pet or leaving them at home, a tailored disaster plan and emergency kit can make all the difference.
Quick tips for pet preparedness include:
- Assembling a disaster kit with pet food, water, medications, leashes, and comfort items
- Planning evacuation routes and shelters that accept animals
- Leaving enough dry food and fresh water for at least three days if pets must stay behind
If evacuating with pets:
- Do so early and make advance reservations when possible
- Keep pets in clean, separate spaces to avoid illness and stress-related behavior
- Ensure up-to-date ID tags and vaccination records are included
If pets must stay at home:
- Create a buddy system with neighbors to check on them
- Never leave pets outdoors or in rooms with windows
- Avoid leaving out vitamin treats, which can be harmful if overeaten
Disaster kits should include:
- Food, water, bowls, bedding, and carriers
- Medication and medical records
- Cleaning supplies and waste bags
- Contact info for vets, shelters, and boarding facilities
