A Daviess County man was taken into custody for allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 69 in Pike County Saturday afternoon and for being under the influence while doing so.

Indiana State Police say at approximately 5 pm Saturday, they along with the Pike County Sheriff’s Department responded to I-69 after several concerned citizens contacted 911 about a wrong way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near the 39 and a half mile-marker, which is south of the State Road 61 exit.

Moments later the 911 dispatcher received another call that the wrong way driver identified as 43-year old Jason Jones of Washington was then driving north in the northbound lanes near the 41 and a half mile-marker.

A trooper spotted Jones vehicle at the 45 and a half mile-marker and immediately activated his emergency lights. He exited I-69 at State Road 61 where he almost struck another vehicle that was stopped on the ramp to turn onto Highway 61.

Police say Jones continued north on State Road 61 a short distance before finally stopping. They say he refused to exit his vehicle and had to be forcibly removed. He was then arrested without further incident.

A search of Jones’ vehicle revealed three 100mg bottles of Methadone. Further investigation revealed Jones had consumed two bottles when he was supposed to only consume one bottle.

Field sobriety tests indicated Jones was impaired, but he refused to submit to a chemical test. Jones was arrested and taken to the Pike County Jail in Petersburg where he booked on Level 6 felony counts of Driving While Intoxicated with a Prior DUI Conviction and Resisting Law Enforcement.

And a Class A Misdemeanor count of Reckless Driving

He is currently being held on bond.
