Elizabeth “Bettye” Clara (Schwenk) Meyer, age 88, of Huntingburg, passed away at 2:20 p.m., on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand.

Elizabeth Bettye Meyer Obituary Photo679_edited-1She was born November 7, 1927, to Otto L. Schwenk and Olivia E. (Schmitt) Schwenk in Boone Township. She was married to Renus F. Meyer on June 22, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dale, Indiana. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1994.

Mrs. Meyer worked for General Electric, for 24 years, and Styline. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg; a past Regent of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #230 in Huntingburg; a member of St. Mary’s Ladies Sodality; and a member of the Santa Claus Home Economic Club. Bettye was a lifetime member of the Santa Claus Legion Auxiliary, and an 8th District past President of the American Legion Auxiliary. She and her husband, Renus, were the first Commander and President team of the 8th District from the Santa Claus Unit #242. She held many offices and chairman positions in the District and Unit. Bettye was chairman of the Indiana Veterans Home for 31 years. In 1960, she received the first award from the Indiana Department of Legislature for excellence. She was a charter member of the Lincoln Hills Forty & Eight Voiture #868, in which she held many offices.

Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Renus F. Meyer; her parents, Otto and Olivia Schwenk; one brother, Robert; her stepmother, Marie (Stemaly) Schwenk; and one stepsister, Kathleen.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly (Jon) Kaetzel of Dale; one son, Eric Meyer of Wantage, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Jeff (Marcia) Kaetzel of Dale, Jeremy (Amy) Kaetzel of Bruceville, Brandy (James) Welp of Ferdinand and Eric Ryan Meyer of Evansville; ten great grandchildren, Kyle, Makinze, Kasey and Kent Kaetzel of Dale, Chris, R.J. and Leslie Kaetzel of Bruceville, and Carter, Mason and Tanner Welp of Ferdinand; and one sister, Sharon Apple of Jasper.

Funeral services for Bettye Meyer will be held at 1:00 p.m., E.D.T., on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., E.D.T., on Wednesday. A parish rosary prayer vigil will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Condolences may be shared with the family online at: www.nassandson.com
