Police in Huntingburg have provided the name of the 16-year old boy who was fatally shot in Huntingburg late Friday night.

16-year old Matthew Kendall of Huntingburg died at the scene of the shooting that took place along the 200 block of North Main Street just after 11:30 pm.

Police charged a 15-year-old Huntingburg juvenile with reckless homicide in Huntingburg after the incident took place.

Police were called to a home located at the North Main Street location after they received word that a male was shot. When they arrived, they found the 16-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his head.

The Huntingburg Fire Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services rendered immediate medical attention, however, the juvenile succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The scene was then secured and an Indiana State Police crime scene technician was requested.

Police determined the 16-year-old male juvenile was visiting a friend at the residence when the 15-year-old friend accidentally discharged a glock 9 mm which had been recently reported stolen from the area.

Multiple individuals were interviewed and the Huntingburg Police Department detective determined that the 15-year-old juvenile residing at the residence took the firearm from a nearby vehicle.

The 15-year-old juvenile was placed under arrest for Level 5 felony count of reckless homicide and Class A misdemeanor theft and then transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.

An investigation by police is continuing. Police have not released the name of the 15-year old accused in the shooting.

Indiana State Police, Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Huntingburg Fire Department, and Memorial EMS all assisted at the scene.
