J.C. Penney has announced that the company plans to close as many as 138 stores nationwide in the coming year and the Jasper Store is among them.

In a release the company says the closings are part of a continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long term profitability.

The company says nearly 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the store closures, most of which will occur in June. The company says they are in the process of identifying relocation opportunities within the company. Most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17.

The Jasper store located in the Jasper Manor Shopping Center on the city’s southeast side is one of five Indiana locations that will close this year.
