The City of Jasper and the Jasper Police Department are mourning the loss of the department’s leader.

Jasper Police Chief Michael Bennett passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon at his home.

Bennett who turned 70 earlier this year had been the department’s chief since he was first appointed by newly elected Mayor Terry Seitz in January of 2012.

Prior to that Bennett had served many years with the Indiana State Police.
