The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says the department has learned that a county resident recently received what is known as a “Grandparent Scam”.

Authorities say this is where a scammer poses as a legal representative of a child the scammer says has been injured in an accident and is in legal trouble or in jail and is in need of bail money so they can be released.

They say the scammer’s method of payment is via a wire transfer of money. They say the scammer left a return call back number which the resident called and did not receive an answer.

The department says the potential victim did however receive a call back a short time later repeating the circumstances, told the caller she felt it was a scam and the caller hung up.

The sheriff’s department says that anyone who may receive one of these “Grandparent Scam” calls, do not give out any personal or banking information or much less wire or send any money.

They say your best defense against scam calls is to just simply hang up.
