Mary E. Schmitt, age 82, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Mary was born in Jasper, Indiana, on March 4, 1937, to George and Theresia (Fritz) Buechlein.  She married Howard L. Schmitt on October 4, 1956, in Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana. She was a 1955 graduate of Jasper High School. 

She was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper and the St. Ann’s Society. She enjoyed bird watching, flowers, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. 

Surviving are her husband, Howard L. Schmitt, J of asper, three daughters, Cheri (Bob) Acton of Jasper, Cindy (Mike) Lichlyter of Jasper, Lisa (Jeff) Brewer of Jasper, five sons, Randy (Sherry) Schmitt of Tijeras, NM, Phil (Laurie Weinzapfel) Schmitt of Speedway, Tony (Linda) Schmitt of Jasper, Glen (Karen) Schmitt of Jasper, Drew (Janelle) Schmitt of Jasper, 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren on the way, and one sister, Virginia “Tootie” Knies of Jasper.

Preceding her in death are four brothers, Maurice, Ambrose, Donnie, and David Buechlein. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary E. Schmitt will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. 

A visitation will be held from 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana.  The St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
