The Huntingburg Fire Department had several runs on Wednesday afternoon.

For the first run, firefighters were sent to the apartment of Carlos Mendez at 108 North Jackson Street at around 1:32 pm for reports of smoke inside.

Huntingburg Fire Department Instructor and Firefighter, John Smith, explains what they found.

Smith says the stove had turned itself on somehow, but no food was left on the stove unintended. By turning off power to the unit and providing ventilation, they were able to rid of the smoke, and the damage was confined to the stove area.

However, when looking around to make sure everything looks clear, Smith says they found a problem with the smoke detectors.

Smith says this is against both the Indiana Code and the Huntingburg City Ordinance. Both of these documents state that all residents must have working smoke alarms. Smith says they were on the scene for around 30 minutes with 14 firefighters and two trucks.

A few minutes after arriving at the apartment scene,  firefighters received a report about smoke at Southridge High School.

Smith says firefighters were on the scene for about 15 minutes.
