A wash-plant conveyor belt at the Shamrock Mine is heavily damaged after a fire over the weekend.

The Ireland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the mine around 5 pm Saturday.

Fire Chief Stan Seifert says the conveyor belt was shut off at midnight after taking coal to get washed off.

A mine official did not notice anything wrong when passing by the area at 3 pm on Saturday. The Fire Chief says the fire may have been caused by a failing bearing.

Firefighters used a water dump tank to pour water on the belt to put it out.

Chief Seifert estimates the damages to be between $25,000 dollars and $35,000.
